YUNHEE LEE | 이윤희
Yunhee Lee's work looks like a unique sculpture made of porcelain. She recreates holiness in a formative language based on ceramic work. Influenced by her family background, the artist has been fascinated by the sanctity and coziness of the religious space. Hence religious figures such as decorative sculptures on the outer walls of the cathedral in medieval European art, Buddhist statues, and guardian deities are easily noticed throughout her oeuvre of works. Lee is willing to be overwhelmed by the frightening mysteries of religious iconography, or the majesty that emits power, and expresses awe in the colorful coloring and elaborate forms that are partly gilded on clear white porcelain.
Dante's "La Divina Media" was the main motif in the <La Divina Media> (2014~) series. She tried to invent a narrative to seek salvation. She realized that Dante's "La Divina Media" served as a prototype for such a story. As medieval Chinese paintings conveyed biblical messages through metaphors and symbols, she recreates the scene of Dante's "La Divina Media" with a collection of allegories such as skeletons symbolizing the fineness of life, bandages symbolizing healing, and spring water symbolizing a haven. Using Dante's "La Divina Media" as her motif, she builds her own narratives on the general aspects of life, including life and death. Her work also features a girl who functions as her alter ego. It is expressed in the form of a diorama, such as a theater, how to meet various people and solve various problems on the way to healing from desire and anxiety.
Yunhee Lee received Master's degree in Pottery at Hongik University Graduate School. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally at E-Piece Gallery, ART PROJECTS GALLERY, Yi Eungno Museum of Art and more. Her works are part of collections of Hanhyang Forest Ceramic Museum, Songeun Cultural Foundation, Yeongeun Art Museum, Sebangji, Busan District Court, cncity (Chungnam-do City Gas), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Bank.
