YOUNGJOO KIM | 김영주
Youngjoo Kim(b. 1987) focuses predominantly on an original state of canvas that presents the planarity of color and form without projecting nor reflecting a new representation of subjects. The artist once stated, “From my perspective, canvas is not a subject that enables to reenact something nor creating a new image through projection.” By experimenting with the form and condition of the canvas, the artist embarked on a journey to reconstruct both visual meanings and values of originality as well as the essence of “creation”.
Youngjoo Kim’s new body of work - ‘The Territory of Matters’, ‘The Distancing’, and ‘Study for ‘The Territory of Matters’- are to be installed at a newly opening TWP CapitaSpring Singapore in 2022. The artist, again, inputs a fundamental idea of ‘condition’ that is to redefine what has been valued as ‘representations’ in traditional fine art. Leaving the traditional means of painting - “hands-on content on canvas” and relying heavily on the medium that is crude and brutally simple, the works presented at TWP CapitaSpring are sets of process that translates Kim’s intuitive perception of art, which expands beyond the relationship between the subject and the object.
The Artist studied Korean Painting and Art History as a dual concentration at Ewha Woman’s University and received a MA Fine Art degree at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, UK. Youngjoo Kim has held solo exhibitions - ‘The Weight of the Air’ (Gallery Woong, Seoul 2021), ‘ ( )’ (Artbit Gallery, Seoul 2019, ‘LOST/FOUND’ (B39 Bucheon Creativity Remix Culture Playground, Bucheon 2018), and ‘Intermission’ (Gallery Dos, Seoul).
She has participated in numerous group exhibitions both locally and internationally as follows, ‘The Story that I Only Can See’ at Dohing Art Seoul, ‘Any Other Generation’ at Jungnang Art Center, Seoul, ‘ Mindscape’ at Seongnnam Art Foundation, Seongnam, ‘MMCA Art Collaboration’ Sponsored by Hyundai Motors, MMCA Artzone, Seoul, ‘Inverse Monument’ (Collaboration with Hiram Wong), Leechkirch, Graz, Austria, ‘Platform Project’ by LUBOMIROV EASON, Art Athina, Athens, Greece and many more. Youngjoo Kim was also shortlisted for ‘The Open West 2014’ by Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, UK and 'Young Artist Exhibition' by Seongnam Art Foundation, Korea.
