YEONGHYE IN | 인영혜
Yeonghye In's work is about self-portraits featuring various structured textiles of cotton, suede, spandex, and much more. Using the face as a role of locking up the expression, the artist opposes Plato's saying of the human body is just a soul garment; and that the expression of the soul is expressed through the face.
The artist is recognized for the ‘Face’ series, which is her distinct practice of re-interpreting chair. This chair work is a continued series of works inspired by her face, reflecting herself as well as the other, that is pressed and weighed down as she sits down. Yeonghye In says that after graduation, she experienced frustration and suffered from repetitive cycle of life, which inevitably affected and challenged the artist to continue her practice. This led to a sense of loss that she has lost herself. Loss of herself leads her to reflects her feelings in her work, such as the sense of humiliation and self-esteem that she felt throughout her social life. When the viewer sits on her chair, the shape of her face changes, showing a smiley or angry look. The act of putting people on faces is feels like self-deprecating. However she explains that such process is a way to create a unique, positive experience which is ironically based on negative experiences that we all have.
Her another series of works, <Sewing drawing series>, presents a flat-screen piece that features her various facial expressions and emotions on the canvas. She uses a sewing machine to create a new look by adding eyes, nose, and mouth expressions to favorite objects and various objects. Forms and geometric patterns that do not exist express the feelings of the artist's pure value and the appearance of the moment in drawing.
Yeonghye In has both BFA and Master Course of Crafts from Chungnam National University. She held numerous exhibitions nationally as well as internationally such as Japan and Hongkong.
