SAM CHUNG | 샘 청

Sam Chung works within the context of the vessel to exploit its universal identity and impart his own vision of merging historical, contemporary and cultural influences. His work draws influence from historical ceramics and design motifs as a point of reference to talk about notions of cross-cultural identity. He is interested in how these old forms transform into new objects that provoke his own perception of belonging within or outside of a culture.

For example, Clouds are widely known as symbols of immortality and longevity, but as a second-generation Korean-American, Sam Chung talks about clouds as a symbol of the fluid artist’s identity between Korean culture and American culture. While borrowing the traditional form of pottery, the cloud outlines that seem to stick out of the ceramic surface escape the past, leaving the remnants of tradition behind by maintaining the form.  In “Cloud series”, a modern reinterpretation of the traditional form with his sophisticated aesthetic adds fun to space.

In his current work, he references traditional Korean cloud motifs and pottery shapes while juxtaposing past with present through his vivid, graphicly painted imagery. The clouds represent a phenomenon that is constantly in flux and correspond to his own questions of belonging within or outside of a culture.

Sam Chung received his BA in studio art from St. Olaf College and his MFA from Arizona State University. He has exhibited his work nationally and internationally at Duane Reed Gallery, Harvey Preston Gallery, Ann Linnemann Gallery (Denmark), ClayAKAR and Greenwich House Pottery. Sam’s work is in several permanent collections including The Everson Museum of Art (NY), Crocker Art Museum (CA), Icheon World Ceramic Center (Korea), Guldagergaard (Denmark), San Angelo Museum (TX) and Weisman Art Museum (MN).
