JUNYOUNG KANG | 강준영

Junyoung Kang is a mix of energy and turbulence by applying graffiti on ceramics. His colorful style was influenced by the street pop culture in Australia where he spent his childhood. His first solo exhibition was held in 2006 after he was awarded the grand prize from Icheon International Ceramic Expo that same year. He has been active in the global art scene, particularly in Europe and Asia. The main theme of his art is “Family Love”. He expresses this theme through modern languages and different mediums, covering not only ceramics, but also paint, found objects, and mixed media. He applies literary storytelling to his vast range of works. With his academic background as a ceramist, the base of his work is soil, that is an ultimate resource, brings warm, genuine, and passionate feelings.

As the artistic combination of colorful contemporary graffiti and the traditional shape of ceramics is compelling to fashionable audiences, his work has been featured by many influential fashion magazines with photoshoots of Korean movie stars, and collaborated with renowned brands such as Nike, LG Fashion, and NARS. Although his eye-capturing work is beloved by fashion brands and many trendy spaces these days, it is not just about vivid visual effect or style. For example, he explores “home” one of the most familiar subject matters to every audience. Everyone builds one’s own universe – at home; it is a base of human life, start of a family, story of growth; sometimes it is the happiest place in the world, in other times, it can be the opposite; love, conflict, hate, joy, sadness… it is the place where all of those human emotions arouse and come across. Indeed, his work embraces our emotions, love, and stories in the ceramics, videos, and other medium. Considering the above, it is not surprising that the literature his work genuinely touches people’s heart, offers comfortable and warm feelings, and makes us smile.

Kang received B.F.A. in Ceramic & Glass, and M.F.A. in Ceramic Art, from Hongik University, Seoul. His work can be found in many private, public collections, and high-end fashion houses, including 10 Corsocomo Seoul, Pradise City, Incheon and the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Building, in Seoul.
