김중백은 모든 혼란함 속에서 벗어 낫을 때 진정한 예술이 나올 수 있다고 믿는다. 작가는 커피를 혼합해 물들인 캔버스 위에 젯소 무수히 겹쳐 바르며 작가만의 독특한 하얀색 바탕을 만들어 낸다. 그리고 그림 위에 그림을 그리며 뒤덮는 행위를 끊임없이 반복하면서도 이를 뚫고 나오는 커피의 색감과 지워진 선들이 스스로 그려지는 그림들을 통해, 깊숙이 숨겨져 있는 인간의 무의식에 대해 고찰하며, 나아가 ‘지운다’는 행위를 통해 예술에 본질에 대해 논의한다.
JOONGBAEK KIM applies numerous layers of paint-mixture with coffee and gesso, presenting rather unfamiliar and yet unique ‘white’ background on the canvas.
Exploring the colour and element of coffee that overruns the painted gesso, the artist then layers the canvas with words and phrases from scriptures and unconscious minds to question the inner consciousness and what lies there. To some extent, this is an act of ‘erasing’ that marks what art really is.
