AEYOUNG KIM | 김애영
Aeyoung Kim brings the typical form of pottery and paints on its surface. The work was created by dismantling, transforming, or recombining its traditional and original form; she captures various stories such as hidden human desires and absurdities of society. Her precise drawings feature multiple stories on the cross-section of white porcelain with an aristocratic and noble image. Kim focuses on the corner of the space where it is considered to be void or useless. She would like to bring a life to the corner by re-dividing ceramics and insert stories in order to capture people’s eyes in this void space. For instance, she recreates a modern landscape painting by combining a traditional Cheonghwa Baekja (Blue and White Porcelain) landscape painting with contemporary events, game images and characters; the traditional landscape paintings transform into contemporary ones.
Her painting has full of lively elements, and the aesthetic of realistic images. Her technique of delicate glaze painting and the primitive way of realism drawings, and the attitude of understanding society in it, meet the fierceness of life. However, the first impression of the pottery form comes more of a refinement than a convoluted one.
“I like painting on ceramics. The ceramic’s various forms and structures allow me to imagine diverse stories and landscapes. Painting on ceramics is different from simply drawing on a canvas. Painting on ceramics should think about harmony with a whole ceramics’ structure, and the structure should be balanced with painting subjects. It is because the ceramic structure always made first and then the next step is drawing and painting on ceramics. This making process is not an easy but, I am enjoying this process and I love to draw in three dimensions. I hope that people who meets my artwork, enjoys finding hidden stories of the structure and painting.”
Aeyoung Kim received B.A. in Fine Arts Department of Ceramic & Glass Art and M.A. in Ceramic Art from Hongik University, Seoul, Korea. Her work is part of the great collection of Seoul Museum of Craft Art, Yanggu Porcelain Museum and others in Korea, and Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Koka City, in Japan.
